It’s always nice to lounge around on your couch all day, but what isn’t nice is laying on unclean furniture.
As time goes on, your couches or any furniture outfitted with upholstery fabric will have crumbs of food bits, dust, and dirt on it. Making any kind of rest or relaxation on them nearly impossible.
Here are a few tips for cleaning your upholstery at home:
Have the right tools available
Before cleaning your upholstery, you need to gather the right tools for the job.
For basic cleaning supplies, you’ll only need a few items such as cleaning solutions to do most of the work. These include warm water to mix everything with and even baking soda to remove foul smells.
For actual cleaning tools, you’ll need sponges and microfiber cloths to wipe down your couches, and a handheld vacuum cleaner to deep clean the surfaces and spaces in between.
Vacuuming
Upholstery should be vacuumed on a weekly basis. Make sure your vacuum has a HEPA filter which lets it suck up as much dust and other particles as it can give you the results you want.
When using a vacuum on your upholstery, don’t leave any spot unturned and make sure to sweep it to the sides and in between the cushions. Don’t forget to sweep the bottom as well since most of the mess can accumulate below your couch.
Removing stains
Stains in your upholstery are particularly tricky to remove. While your vacuuming may clean most of your couches, it can’t really do much with the mess that a stain leaves.
Odors from these stains can really ruin your furniture, which is why it’s handy to keep some baking powder around to eliminate them.
As for handling a stain directly, remove any solid debris from the mess and then dab out the rest with a cloth or sponge mixed with warm water and cleaning solutions that are specifically made for fabrics.
