Cleaning dishes with a dirty sponge isn’t the best way to keep them germ-free.
So, aside from replacing a month-old sponge you’ve been using, you should also keep them clean as well before you tend to that next pile of unwashed dishes on the sink.
Here are a few ways you can keep your sponges clean:
Using your dishwasher
Did you know you can use the dishwasher to clean a kitchen sponge?
Set your dishwasher to “heated dry” and throw in the sponge along with the plates. This should help cleanse the sponge so you have something fresh to use on the dishes the next time around.
Heating it up with the microwave
Heating up your sponge in the microwave can also clean it on a deeper level.
How? Soak up your sponge in water and put it in a microwavable bowl. Place the bowl inside the microwave and set the timer to 1-2 minutes. After which, open up the door and let your sponge cool off for 10-15 minutes before taking it out and squeezing out any excess water left in it.
Soaking and washing in a solution
If you prefer to keep your sponges clean in a solution, try rinsing it in a bleach or vinegar mix before washing it thoroughly for about 2-3 minutes.
Don’t forget to squeeze out excess water and to dry your sponge on a heated area. For this, you could use your dishwasher set to “dry heating.”
Using some vinegar
Vinegar can work wonders on just about anything, including kitchen sponges!
For this, you can soak the sponge in a small bowl that’s filled with warm water and three tablespoons of white vinegar. You may leave it overnight before rinsing it with some water and squeezing it free of any moisture.
For the best results, you can heat the sponge in the microwave once it’s totally dry.
